Roses have a long and fragrant history. Throughout the years they've been the symbol of love, beauty, adoration and even war and politics. Fossil evidence has dated the rose all way back to 35 million years ago. It's believed that the first roses were cultivated in China over 5,000 years ago.

Rose history becomes clearer after that point, and during Roman times rose petals were used as confetti during celebrations. They were also an ingredient in medicines and additionally a fragrance in perfumes. Rose history shows that when Rome finally fell, the popularity of this flower ebbed and waned depending on the gardening trends of the time.

During the 1400s, roses were used to signify fighting factions in England. This is where the "War of the Roses" conflict began. It was a battle between York, symbolized by a white rose, and Lancaster, symbolized by a red rose.

Rose history becomes very interesting during the 17th century when roses were so valued that their petals and water were officially recognized as legal tender. And following in the 18th century is when roses began being cultivated as they are today.
